Figure Skating Coaching
Whether you're prepping for a USFS test or chasing IJS scores, the path runs through edge precision. The jumps, spins, and steps you love most all start from the same place.
Work with StephanieJumps, spins, step sequences, Moves in the Field — every element you compete and train starts on an edge. Stephanie's methodology finds the edge root cause and fixes it, so every element improves from a real foundation.
The edge you load on takeoff determines your jump trajectory, rotation timing, and landing line. For spins, the entry edge is what separates a centered camel from one that travels across the ice. An incorrect Lutz edge ("e" call) or an unclear flip edge ("!") doesn't just cost GOE — it tells the technical panel something about your edge foundation overall. Strong freestyle is built on clean edges, and clean edges are what coaching can fix.
Inconsistent edges across skaters break the visual line of elements. For synchro athletes, freestyle (including jumps in synchro blocks) requires matching edge quality across the team. An individual edge problem becomes a team problem at competition. Stephanie works with synchro athletes on the individual edge precision that makes team elements clean.
MITS are assessed almost entirely on edge quality. Brackets, rockers, counters, choctaws, and Mohawks on deep edges are what pass. Most test failures trace back to a specific edge not yet meeting passing depth. Pre-test work targets those edges before test day.
IJS awards step sequence levels including "steps executed on deep edges" and "difficult turns with two clean edges" as explicit level features. Unclear edge calls can disqualify a feature that should count. Edge coaching directly converts into level credits.
"Edge quality (depth, clarity, control of edges)" is an explicit sub-criterion in USFS IJS Skating Skills guidelines. A technical edge foundation doesn't just help individual elements — it raises the floor on how judges read your skating overall.
Deep, committed edges are the language of ice dance. Pattern dances, free dance footwork, and partner matching all depend on consistent edge depth. Stephanie's assessment identifies the edge gaps and addresses them directly, whether for individual development or tryout preparation.

Stephanie Culver coaches edge technique across figure skating disciplines — freestyle, ice dance, synchronized skating, and test prep. Her methodology starts with assessment: watch the skater, identify the specific edge causing the element problem, and fix it at the source.
Whether a skater is preparing a USFS Bronze Moves test or training for a senior IJS competition, the process is the same: find the edge, fix the foundation, and let every element above it improve.
